About Manawatu Audit

A specialist local audit and assurance practice

Manawatu Audit was established to provide focused assurance services to organisations that value quality, responsiveness and timely delivery.

We understand that an audit or review competes with the day-to-day demands of running an organisation. Our role is to provide the independent assurance stakeholders require, while making the process as clear, practical and manageable as possible.

As a specialist assurance practice, we believe effective assurance is about more than technical expertise alone. Clear communication, responsiveness and a practical understanding of your organisation are equally important. To support this, you will have a dedicated point of contact throughout the engagement. We work alongside you and your team to deliver an assurance process that is efficient, well managed and provides insights and value beyond the audit opinion or review report itself.

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT

Michael Smit

Michael is a Chartered Accountant, qualified auditor (available to complete statutory audits) and assurance professional with extensive experience across commercial, public sector and not-for-profit organisations.

His career has included audit and assurance roles with Audit New Zealand and within the Research and Development division of the Office of the Auditor-General, followed by leadership and later ownership positions at CKS Audit and BDO Manawatu. He has worked across a broad range of governance and accountability environments, including the not-for-profit, commercial, local government, education, energy and health sectors.

Michael established Manawatu Audit to provide organisations with direct access to experienced assurance leadership and a responsive, locally based service. His approach combines technical expertise with a practical understanding of the organisations he works with. Clear communication, responsiveness and a focus on building effective working relationships help to deliver assurance engagements that are efficient, well managed and provide insights and value beyond the expected audit opinion or review report itself.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Business Studies and Diploma in Accounting from Massey University. He became a Chartered Accountant in 2003, obtained a Certificate of Public Practice in 2015, achieved qualified auditor status in 2016, and is an Approved Auditor for the Audit Office (formerly the Office of the Auditor-General).
